Brandon Sigmund, of Mitchell, was named the South Dakota Golf Association’s Male Athlete of the Year for his efforts in the 2012 season. The award was announced Friday by the SDGA.
“It’s just a sense of accomplishment,” Sigmund said. “I put a lot of work into my golf game and never expected to win something like this. It feels really good to receive this honor.”
In the 2012 season, the 37-year-old accomplished many feats out on the course. He won two SDGA championships, claiming the Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship and the Men’s Amateur Championship titles.
“Winning the amateur championship was special,” said Sigmund, who has golfed for 22 years. “That definitely is a highlight in my career.”
Along with winning the amateur tournament, Sigmund also earned a spot on the three-man South Dakota State Team, which played in the United States Golf Association Men’s State Championships Sept. 19-21 in New Jersey.
Although the team did not place, Sigmund said it was worth the trip.
“It was an absolute lifetime experience,” he said. “Regardless of how we played, it was memorable and I’m glad I was able to be a part of something like that.
“It’s something that I would like to go do again, but it’s not something I’m going to work for and if it happens, it happens.”
Sigmund also reached the semifinals in the Match Play Championship, finished in the top 10 in the Two-Man Championship and tied for 11th place in the Mid-Amateur Two-Man Championship. In addition, he finished with a record of 3-0-0 in his first SoDak Cup appearance.
Sigmund said the honor has encouraged him to keep improving.
“It motivates me to work harder,” he said. “There’s a sense in me that wants to work to try to validate it, but I have to have realistic expectations. If I can accomplish another season like this, it would be wonderful.”
