LETTER: Initiated Measure 15 would do more harm than good

Vote “No” on Initiated Measure 15. This tax increase of 25 percent is on all taxable sales, with no sunset clause.

By: Lou Sebert, Former mayor, Mitchell

To the Editor:

Vote “No” on Initiated Measure 15. This tax increase of 25 percent is on all taxable sales, with no sunset clause. It is permanent. This tax increase is for only two groups, and there are many groups in the state that would also like to have an increase in revenue for salary purposes.

We need to remember this increase in revenue is for operating costs, only for school and Medicaid, and it would come with no guarantee or increase in services.

These two groups evidently feel our elected governor and legislators do a lousy job of dispursing your tax dollars to all groups in the state. The main purpose of Measure 15 is to increase teacher salaries and my personal view is, with their salary and benefit package, they do very well and better than the average employee within the state of South Dakota. Measure 15 will raise about $180 million from all of us and it goes only to two groups. This is wrong.
