DWU men's soccer wins 2-1, women fall 4-1

After the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s soccer team fell to Northwestern College, the men’s team came back to pick up a win for the Tigers.
The Red Raiders won the women’s game 4-1, before the Tigers downed Northwestern 2-1 in the men’s Great Plains Athletic Conference match Wednesday night at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
In the men’s contest, Northwestern’s Gabriel Goncalves scored the first goal to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.
Hugo Gonzalez responded for the Tigers in the 39th minute and the match went into the half tied at 1.
DWU got the game-winner in the 59th minute when Jose Lopez scored on a corner kick and goaltender Alex Nelson didn’t allow another Red Raider goal as the Wesleyan men improved to 4-11-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the GPAC.
The Northwestern men are 10-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the GPAC. The Red Raiders outshot the Tigers 10-5.
Nelson finished the contest with nine saves.
The DWU women dropped to 2-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the GPAC with the loss. Northwestern improved to 8-6-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the GPAC.
The Red Raiders got out to a 2-0 lead in the first half of the women’s game before Yutzil Rodriguez found the back of the net in the 61st minute to put the Tigers on the board.
Northwestern would respond with two more goals, however, and cruise to the victory.
DWU outshot Northwestern 13-8 in the women’s match. Kari Durham had four saves for the Tigers.
Both DWU teams return to action Saturday in another GPAC matchup as they take on Doane College in Crete, Neb.
