CHEERS to the Rotary Club for sponsoring a pair of debates in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 6 election. Last week, the organization hosted a debate about Referred Law 14, which would establish a fund to help lure big business projects into the state. The week before the election, the club will host a debate about Referred Law 16, dealing with education issues in South Dakota. Debates are a great way to inform the public, and we appreciate the debaters who are willing to give their time to these worthy events.

HISSES to the winds that whipped through the Dakotas last week. We thought we had it bad here in South Dakota, where trees were downed and trucks were overturned on Interstate 90. It was nothing compared to what happened in Bucyrus, N.D., where a wildfire — pushed along by the 60 mph winds — swept through the town and destroyed it. The winds of Wednesday and Thursday were fierce, but they come to remind us that living in South Dakota must have at least one downfall.

CHEERS to pheasant hunting season and all that comes with it. Not only is a time of great tradition in South Dakota, but it’s also a time for family reunions and the rekindling of old friendships. Also, it’s a serious tourist season, and hundreds of businesses in South Dakota rely heavily upon this time of year to make a living. We welcome the hunters, and urge them to be safe, courteous and lawful as they roam the fields of our state. And remember: No pheasant is worth an unsafe shot.

CHEERS to news that gasoline prices have begun to slide downward. Last week, The Associated Press reported that the national average retail price fell for 10 straight days and came to $3.74 per gallon. Around these parts, the price was even lower, and one national analyst has predicted that prices will continue to drop in the coming days and weeks.
