SIOUX FALLS — Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., said he visited George McGovern on Friday afternoon.

Johnson said the three-term senator and 1972 Democratic Party presidential nominee was “resting comfortably” at the hospice.

“He seemed peaceful and at rest,” Johnson said. “My prayers are with him and his family.”

McGovern, who represented South Dakota in Congress for 22 years, entered the Dougherty Hospice House on Monday. His family and several close friends have visited McGovern, whom they said is no longer responsive.

Steve Hildebrand, a Mitchell native and longtime Democratic Party operative, is serving as a family spokesman. Hildebrand said Wednesday that McGovern is “at the end stages of his life.”
