SPEARFISH (AP) — Officials in the western South Dakota town of Spearfish are considering a plan to double the size of the city's convention center.

A feasibility study commissioned by the city recommends increasing the size of the center to about 20,000 square feet to accommodate larger crowds and higher-paying customers.

City Finance Officer Dave Dutton tells the media that the convention center now has to turn away some groups because the center is not large enough or has no room if another group has already booked the facility.

The $5.3 million project would be funded by the city's hotels, restaurants, bars and other attractions in the tourism industry. They would pay for the expansion through a business improvement district that would be created by the Spearfish City Council.
