ALEXANDRIA — A Friday night fire resulted in damage to hay and a semi, but no structures.

Alexandria volunteer firefighter Eric Schroeder said the fire occurred on Tom Weber’s farm northeast of Alexandria. Schroeder said it was hard to determine an origin, but it’s believed that when a bearing went out on a hay grinder earlier in the day, it may have set off a spark that smoldered until turning into a full-fledged blaze Friday night.

Schroeder said the fire burned a swath about 75 yards long and 25 yards wide, consuming several hay bales and a semi and trailer loaded with hay.

Schroeder said the Spencer, Emery and Alexandria fire departments responded around 10:15 p.m. and stayed through the night to keep an eye on the hay piles that were smoldering.

“Wind was blowing the smoke right into the farm place,” Schroeder said. “We didn’t want it to burn any structures.” He said firefighters continued to check on the situation throughout the weekend. Schroeder said there will be no further investigation of the fire. “It was all accidental,” he said.
