FAYETTE, Iowa — Augustana scored the first 49 points of the game and went on to a 66-20 win over the Upper Iowa Peacocks in college football action Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.
Mitchell native Justin Greenway had two carries for 24 yards in the Vikings’ win. The team was led on the ground by Dajon Newell with 117 yards and three touchdowns on 18 attempts. C.J. Ham tallied 105 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 carries For Augustana, which improved to 3-4 on the season.
Augustana plays its next game at home against rival University of Sioux Falls Saturday at Kirkbey-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls.
South Dakota State University 31, Western Illinois 10
BROOKINGS — With touchdowns coming from the offense, defense and specials teams, South Dakota State rolled over Western Illinois 31-10 in college football action Saturday in Brookings.
Tyrel Kool opened the game off with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Zach Zenner recorded another big game for the Jackrabbits, finishing with 171 yards rushing and two touchdowns while also hauling in two passes for 20 yards. Skyler Luxa scored SDSU’s defensive touchdown on an interception brought back 23 yards for the score in the third quarter.
SDSU improved to 5-1 with the win and prepares for a big matchup next week as it travels to take on Northern Iowa at 4 p.m. Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa, while Western Illinois dropped to 3-3 on the season.
Missouri State 27, University of South Dakota 24
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The University of South Dakota football team led 24-10 with six minutes left to play, but the Coyotes couldn’t hold on as Missouri State came away with a 27-24 win Saturday in Springfield, Mo.
The Bears (1-6) hadn’t scored a point in the fourth quarter all season before coming back to beat the Coyotes (1-5).
USD had jumped out to a 21-3 lead at halftime and was led by Josh Vander Maten who completed 13 of 22 passes for 164 yards and rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Vander Maten was sacked five times in the game.
The Coyotes hope to end their six-game losing streak as they take on North Dakota State at 6 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls.
University of Sioux Falls 31, Concordia University 23
SIOUX FALLS — Taylor Perkins threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns to help the University of Sioux Falls defeat Concordia University, St. Paul 31-23 Saturday in Sioux Falls.
The Cougars (5-1) rebounded from their first loss a week before and came out with a 75 yard touchdown drive to get an early lead. John Tidwell came down with two interceptions to help the USF defense, including one on the Golden Bears’ final drive to lock up the win.
Carrington Hanna was the main receiving threat for USF, bringing in eight catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. USF returns to action Saturday to take on Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
Dakota State 35, Briar Cliff 28
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Dakota State University picked up its first win of the season and ended a 10-game losing streak with a 35-28 win over Briar Cliff Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Trojans trailed 28-21 in the fourth quarter, but managed to score the final 14 points of the contest to improve to 1-7 on the season. The Chargers dropped to 1-6.
Brandon Large was 27-for-40 passing for 317 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. John Niesen had 36 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown and Bobby Tisch led the team with eight catches for 86 yards.
SD School of Mines 75, Presentation 6
RAPID CITY — In a matchup of South Dakota teams, South Dakota School of Mines cruised to a 75-6 victory over Presentation College in football action Saturday in Rapid City.
The Hardrockers put up 36 points in the first quarter and improved to 2-5. Presentation fell to 1-6.
Mike Zanutto completed 7 of 11 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns in the win.
Presentation’s Stephen Braswell was 23-for-35 passing for 193 yards. He threw one touchdown and one interception.
SD School of Mines has a bye week before taking on Fort Hays State University Oct. 27 in Rapid City, while Presentation looks to bounce back Saturday against the University of Minnesota-Morris in Morris, Minn.
Chadron State 62, Black Hills State University 14
CHADRON, Neb. — Chadron State defeated Black Hills State University 62-14 in college football action Saturday in Chadron, Neb.
Chadron State improved to 5-2 on the season, while Black Hills State fell to 1-5.
In the loss, Ward Anderson completed 22 of 39 passes for 207 yards for the Yellow Jackets. He was picked off twice and completed one pass for a touchdown. Anderson also rushed for a touchdown. Daniel Hancock tallied 11 catches for 100 yard s and a touchdown.
The Yellow Jackets’ next contest is against Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday in Pueblo, Colo.
