Fire restrictions downgraded in Black Hills area

RAPID CITY (AP) — Campfires and wood stoves can be used again inside the boundaries of the Black Hills National Forest and the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District.

Officials say cooler temperatures and higher humidity have moderated the fire danger. Campfires and stove fire restrictions have been lifted for developed recreation sites and improved sites.

The downgrading of fire restrictions also includes Bear Butte State Park, Custer State Park, Sheps Canyon, Cheyenne and Bailey Lakeside use areas at Angostora, and the Rocky Point Recreational camping area near Belle Fourche.

Smoking is now permitted within an enclosed vehicle or building in developed areas or while stopped in an barren area at least three feet in diameter or an area cleared of all flammable materials.
