Yankton’s Dr. Milroy wins Spirit of Dakota

HURON — Dr. Mary J. Milroy, of Yankton, was presented the 2012 Spirit of Dakota Award at ceremonies Saturday in Huron.

Milroy was one of 15 candidates for the award, which was first given in 1987 in conjunction with the unveiling of the Spirit of Dakota sculpture. The sculpture by South Dakota artist Dale Lamphere captures in bronze the character, strength and courage of the pioneer woman.

Milroy was recognized for her leadership in the formation of the South Dakota Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The foundation provides funds for the screening and treatment of breast cancer, and also dedicates money for breast cancer research in South Dakota.
