LETTER: Project will bring handmade mittens to Mitchell children

To the Editor:

I’d like to tell you about a new project that we’re starting for Mitchell children.

It’s called “Mittens for Mitchell.” I was recently criticized because I’m always doing for ones outside of Mitchell. I was showing off a box of mittens I had that were handmade for children on the reservations, when I was questioned about why I never did anything for the people here in town. Thus, the idea was born.

The mittens are made out of fleece and flannel scraps that we used for lining. If you have a bag or box stashed in a closet or corner because you won’t want to throw them away, this is the time to donate them to a project. I’ll help you get rid of something and you’ll be helping a good cause.

We are going to start cutting on Oct. 26 about 10 a.m. and will go as long as there is someone there to cut. We will do the same on Saturday, only starting at 9 a.m. Come and bring a sharp pair of scissors and help cut fleece mittens out.

We will meet at Timberglenn Inn. If you have scraps you may drop them off at “The Inn” or at Fabric Warehouse or the Ben Franklin Store.

Then, the plans are that on Nov. 2, we start sewing and will continue each Friday and Saturday until Thanksgiving week. You’ll need to bring your sewing machine and scissors, plus an extension cord if you have one. We have the lofty goal to supply all the kids in the snack program a new pair of mittens at Christmas.

This is a total Mitchell project, not a church group, just a group of citizens that care about our future generation’s hands. If you have a 4-H group or mission group that wants to be involved, come.
