HERE COMES THE BOOM
Kevin James stars as a teacher who will literally take a punch to save his school’s music program.
James plays Scott Voss, a teacher and former collegiate wrestler, in this comedy with a heart. Scott is a 42-year-old apathetic biology teacher in a failing high school.
When cutbacks threaten to cancel the music program and lay off its teacher (Henry Winkler), Scott begins to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. Everyone thinks Scott is crazy — most of all the school nurse, Bella (Salma Hayek) — but in his quest, Scott gains something he never expected as he becomes a sensation that rallies the entire school.
“Here Comes the Boom” opens nationally on Friday, including at the Luxury 5 Cinemas. 105 minutes. It is rated PG for bouts of MMA sports violence, some rude humor and language.
ARGO
Ben Affleck directed and stars in a thrilling and funny true story of the CIA agents who faked shooting a movie to try to rescue American hostages.
Based on true events, this film chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis — the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. But, in the midst of the chaos of the Iranian hostage crisis, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador.
Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist, played by Affleck, comes up with a risky plan. He and his team, some of whom are actual Hollywood crew, go into Iran under the pretense of shooting a new science fiction action movie titled “Argo.”
They hope to slip the hostages out as part of the film crew. Affleck also directed the film and maintains the edge-of-your-seat tension and humor throughout the story as the team tries to bluff and trick its way to safety and freedom.
“Argo” opens today nationally, including at the Luxury 5 Cinemas. 120 minutes. It is rated R for language and some violent images.
TAKEN 2
Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills in this action thriller.
A retired CIA agent with a “particular set of skills” will stop at nothing to save his daughter Kim from kidnappers. When the father of one of the villains Bryan killed swears revenge, and takes Bryan and his wife hostage in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape. Bryan then employs his unique tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers, one by one.
“Taken 2” is held over. 92 minutes. It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and some sensuality.
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA
This animated family comedy welcomes you to Hotel Transylvania for a monster of a good time.
Dracula now runs a lavish five-stake resort where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters — Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves and more — to celebrate his daughter, Mavis’s, 118th birthday. But Drac’s world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.
The animated comedy features the voices of Adam Sandler, Miley Cyrus, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Cee-Lo Green, David Spade and Steve Buscemi.
“Hotel Transylvania” is held over through Oct. 18. 92 minutes. It is rated PG for some rude humor, action and scary images.
FRANKENWEENIE
From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes this heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog.
After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life — with just a few minor adjustments.
He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash” on life can be monstrous
“Frankenweenie” is held over through Oct. 18. 87 minutes. It is rated PG for thematic elements, scary images and action.
