SIOUX FALLS (AP) — The executive director of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority is retiring at the end of the year.

Mike Sullivan tells the media that he plans to return to Jacksonville, Fla., where he spent 28 years prior to coming to Sioux Falls. He says he wants to be closer to his two children and two grandchildren.

The 65-year-old Sullivan was the Sports Authority's first leader and has led the organization for five years. He says it provides a tremendous base, and people now know they can bring an event to Sioux Falls and it'll be successful.

Sullivan was instrumental in Sioux Falls hosting Summit League championships in basketball, baseball and outdoor track and field. The basketball tournaments have set records for attendance, sponsorship dollars and media coverage.
