CHEERS to Laura Klock, a Mitchell woman whose story was featured in the September issue of Oprah Winfrey’s O magazine. The story detailed the role Klock had in founding Helping with Horsepower, a program that sees girls at Mitchell’s Abbott House aiding in the process of rebuilding motorcycles.

Klock is an accomplished biker herself, having set records on motorcycles, and we suspect her own abilities help her connect with girls in the program. Klock’s program is a good one, and we’re glad to see her story picked up by Winfrey’s magazine.

HISSES to the demise of the Parade of Lights. We opined on this a couple of weeks ago, hoping that something could be done to save the annual holiday parade.

Unfortunately, the numbers just weren’t there. Other events will be held, however, and we hope the people of the area participate.

CHEERS to the coming end of construction on Havens Avenue in Mitchell. We only drive on Havens — we haven’t had to endure a summer of trying to do business on that mangled thoroughfare.

Originally, the deadline for the renovation’s completion was Oct. 28, but our hopes rose when we reported earlier this year that work was moving ahead of schedule.

Last week, we reported that things are finally coming to an end, and the smooth, new layer of asphalt on that street is proof that it’s almost over. Thank goodness.

CHEERS to Dakota Wesleyan University’s homecoming, which was held over the weekend.

Whether it’s the satellite events — such as the alumni dinners and parade — or the game itself, homecoming just seems special in a town like Mitchell.
