Fitts, DWU lead GPAC after second qualifier

LINCOLN, Neb. — Lauren Fitts carded a 79 for the best score of the day at the Great Plains Athletic Conference women’s golf qualifier No. 2 Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb.

Fitts helped Dakota Wesleyan record the best team score at the event with a 333, 15 strokes better than Morningside College. The tournament was the second of four tournaments used to crown a conference champion. DWU has tallied a 685 through the first two outings and leads second place Northwestern College by 29.

Fitts leads the individual standings with a two-round total of 162. Fellow Tigers’ golfer Chelsea Burback is tied for second with Briar Cliff’s Dawn Chapman with 168. Burback scored an 81 in Wednesday’s round for the third best score.

Jenna Winckler tied for the fourth-best score Wednesday with an 84, Talia Peters tied for 12th with an 89 and Natalie Turner tied for 27th with a 94 for DWU. Winckler is in fifth place in the overall standings in the conference.

The third GPAC qualifier is set for April 9 in Hastings, Neb. The final conference meet is on April 26 in North Sioux City.
