McCook County personnel responded to two vehicles that collided at the intersection of state Highway 38 and 431st Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The wreck resulted in one fatality, according to Highway Patrol Trooper Matthew Petersen. Petersen said Dorothy Nipp, 65, was driving north on 431st Avenue in a 2011 Lexus GX6, and after stopping at a stop sign at the intersection, failed to see Ward Ross, 43, traveling west in a Chevrolet Corsica.

The trooper said Nipp saw Ross “at the last second,” and tried to swerve to the west; however, the vehicles collided and Ross was pronounced dead at the scene. Nipp and one passenger, her husband, who was in the back seat, received minor injuries. Both vehicles were a total loss.

Petersen said Nipp was wearing her seat belt; Ross was not. The trooper also said that any citations against Nipp are still pending; if any are given, he said, it would be for a violation of a stop sign. He said he does not expect any charges to be filed by the McCook County State’s Attorney against Nipp.

The busy intersection is the turnoff to Spencer about one mile east of the Hanson County line. Following the collision, both vehicles ended up on their sides at the northwest corner of the intersection in front of a private home that had once been the Golden Pheasant restaurant.
