Chamberlain's Caldwell wins Class A title

Chamberlain senior Coleman Caldwell knew a comeback would be tough trailing by five strokes headed into the final day of the Class A state golf tournament.

Cadwell, a six-time state participant, rallied from behind and shot a 71 to finish with a two-day score of 145, claiming his first Class A state championship Tuesday at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club.

“I knew I had the game to do it,” said Caldwell, who was in third place after the first day with a 74. “This is the highlight of my year.”

Caldwell was two strokes ahead of Sisseton’s Ryan Medhaug headed into the final two holes. Medhaug is a two-time Class A state champion and finished with a two-day score of 147 for second place.

Caldwell, whose group started the day on the 10th hole, said his best shot of his day was on Hole 7, where he sank a 10-foot putt from off the green that gave him the two-stroke advantage with two to play.

“That really sealed the deal,” Caldwell said.

Cadwell’s previous best state tournament finish was a third-place finish as an eighth-grader. He also took fifth as a sophomore, placed 14th twice and 15th last year as a junior, a year he had a wrist injury that kept him from the top of his game.

Caldwell said his next plan is to get a scholarship to play collegiately. He said Dakota Wesleyan University, South Dakota State and Central College (Iowa) have all shown interest in his talents.

“This just feels really great right now,” he said.

Lead-Deadwood won the team title with a two-day score of 655, while Harrisburg took second with a 650.

Individually, Parkston’s Jake Weber tied for ninth with a two-day score of 161 and Caldwell’s teammate, Lane Shroyer, tied for 16th with a 16. Adam Bleeker was Mitchell Christian’s top golfer with a 177, Wes Vander Pol finished with a 195, Jackson Feiner finished with a 201 and Adam Rasmussen had a 220.
