With a team score 21 strokes better than any Class AA boys’ team in state tournament history, Sioux Falls Lincoln ran away with the title Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

The Patriots carded a 596 in the two-day event, 13 strokes better than two-time defending champion Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

Since the Class AA division was established in 2001, the best score recorded in a state tournament had been 617, shot by Sioux Falls O’Gorman in 2002 at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

“With the teams that were here, I kind of thought you would need to be around 600 to win it,” Lincoln coach Lyle Pearson said. “But to break it was pretty big.”

Along with the team title, Lincoln took home the individual crown as one of its golfers, Tommy Vining, came away with the best score of the tournament.

The sophomore entered the second round with the lead after shooting even par on day one. Vining recorded another round of 72 to win the title, edging Thomas Hogg, of Aberdeen Central, who shot a 145.

“I just tried to stay in the moment and play as good as I could for the team,” Vining said.

Vining looked to be running away in the individual standings after shooting 2-under par in his first nine holes Tuesday. But a pair of bogeys early on the back nine had him needing to set things straight once again.

“There are mistakes out on that golf course and I knew I couldn’t get mad at myself for making them,” he said.

A long putt on Hole 15 got Vining’s confidence back up and he continued shooting well, leading by 3 strokes heading into the final hole.

“I found out on the last hole that I could three putt to win,” he said. “I was nervous on 17, but I wasn’t too nervous on the last hole.”

As a freshman last year, Vining finished third at the state tournament. He shot a 151 and was just 1 shot off Clay Kopplin, of Sturgis, who won the event.

“(Vining) plays a lot of golf and he is so steady,” Pearson said.

With three of the top five finishers at the tournament returning to next year’s lineup, Pearson said his team should be one of the top squads for the next few years.

“We’re looking forward to it,” he said. “We know we’re not the only good team coming back next year, but we’re certainly going to be one of them.”
