Jaron Weich led the Mitchell High School golf team with a 78, putting him in a tie for 17th, in the first round of the Class AA state boys’ golf tournament Monday at Lakeview Golf Course.
The Kernels sit in 15th place with 351 strokes after the first day of the tournament behind Huron, which totaled a 346.
“Obviously we’re disappointed in our team standing after the first day,” head coach Sean Moen said. “We can play better than that in our home course. We expect to shoot in the middle of the pack and not anything less.”
After Weich, Jacob Rice finished the round in 57th with an 85, Aaron Sudbeck carded a 91 for 74th, Tyson Allen shot a 97 for 86th place, Ryan Solberg placed 88th with a 98 and Landon Pooley shot a 102 for 91st.
“It was a struggle with the wind,” Moen said. “The kids seemed pretty nervous to perform well in their hometown. Once they got into the round, they started to settle in.”
Weich said the team will need each player to better its score by a few strokes to make a big jump in the standings.
“I think everyone is used to the state tournament atmosphere now and we all feel like we can play a lot better,” Weich said.
Brookings’ Cayden Bartels hit his first hole-in-one on Hole 3, a 176-yard par-3.
Sioux Falls Lincoln leads the tournament with a total of 299.
“The most pleasing thing is that the all six players played better on the back than on the front,” Lincoln coach Lyle Pearson said. “We’re in a good position after day one but there are still a lot of other schools in the hunt.”
Sioux Falls O’Gorman is three strokes behind the Patriots in second place with a 302 on the day.
Three ESD schools round out the top five with Yankton in third with 308 and Aberdeen Central and Brandon Valley in a tie for 4th with 312 strokes in the first round.
Lincoln’s Tommy Vining and Parker Klitzke sit in the top two spots shooting 72 and 73 on the par-72 course. There is a five-way tie for third place with scores of 74.
“We need the same focus tomorrow and can’t get too excited about the outcome,” Pearson said. “We’re looking to even have a better day (today).”
The final round of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. today at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
Lead-Deadwood in first at Class A tournament
SPEARFISH —Lead-Deadwood is in first place after the first round of the Class A state boys’ golf tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club.
Lead-Deadwood is in front by 17 strokes with a 311. Harrisburg is in second with a 328 and Dell Rapids is in third place with a 330.
Parkston shot a 357 for 10th place, Chamberlain carded a team score of 373 for 13th and Mitchell Christian took 14th with a 398 after day one.
“It wasn’t where I wanted us to be after day one,” Parkston coach Tyler Hockett said. “I know we can shave off a ton of strokes and there’s only 19 strokes separating us between fifth place. We are capable of making up that.”
Lead-Deadwood’s Gabe Dirksen leads the individual race shooting a 69 in the first round.
Chamberlain’s Coleman Caldwell finished in third place after day one, sitting five strokes behind Dirksen with a 74. Two-time champion Ryan Medhaug, of Sisseton, is tied with Caldwell with a 74.
Parkston’s Jake Weber carded a 79 and finished 10th and Mitchell Christian’s Adam Bleeker shot an 85 for 27th place.
