Parkston Area Special Olympics team places second

Members of the Parkston Area Special Olympics team competed in the Special Olympics South Dakota State Softball Tournament in Brookings Sept. 22-23.
They ended up with second place in one of the Tball divisions of the tournament. Carly VanRoekel, Ethan fifth-grade student, was a member of the team. Team coaches were Carly’s brother, Tyler VanRoekel, and her teacher, Nicole VanLeur.
Colton Bierle won the Saturday Night Shoot-out Championship at Thunder Valley Dragway this season. He is also the track champion of the Mod ET class at the race track.
Bierle, along with other racers, will receive his awards at a banquet in October. Bierle is a senior at Ethan and is the don of Doug and Alisa Bierle.
The Ethan Booster Club will be sponsoring a pregame meal at the football game vs. Kimball-White Lake on Oct. 5.
The booster club will be serving Arby’s roast beef sandwiches, chips, cookies and a drink for $5. Serving will begin at 2 p.m. and will continue throughout the football game.
The CSO is sponsoring a book fair. The book fair will be held on Oct. 5 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
It will also be held during parent teacher conferences on Oct. 8, from noon until 6:30 p.m. There will be books available for all ages.
The local oral interp contest was held Thursday at the Ethan School.
The winners were: poetry, first, Brenna Roth; second, Dylan Chmela; humorous, first, Kendra Klumb; second, Cody Brouwer; third, Sam Comp; serious prose, first, Brenna Roth; second, Jonathon Freeman; duet, first, Alex Gerlach and Shelby Fathke; second, Alyssa Hettinger and Danika Pollreisz; third, Darbi Gustafson and Maggie Mueller; reader’s theater, first, Morgan Tuttle, Haleigh Riggs and Aliea Kretschmer-Webster; second, Danika Pollreisz, Alyssa Hettinger, Kala Nurnberg, tied for third, Kailey Feiner, Jocee McGuire, Tia Schmidt, Tabith Sonne, Katelyn Wittstruck and Caleb Brouwer, Cody Brouwer, Dylan Chmela, Jonathon Freeman and Katelyn Warren.

Today: Football, Howard at Emery; seventh- and eighth-grade at 4 p.m. and JV at 5 p.m.
Tuesday: Volleyball vs. Wessington Springs, home, junior high at 5:15 p.m.
Thursday: Fifth- and sixth-grade basketball vs. Mitchell Christian at home; 6 p.m., (girls, then boys).
Friday: CSO book fair, 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., library. Football vs. Kimball-White Lake at home; 3 p.m.; booster club pregame meal from 2 p.m. throughout the game.
Saturday: Fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball tournament at Kimball.
