SD college football previews: Coyotes take on conference rival ISU

VERMILLION — The University of South Dakota looks to rebound from a loss last week as it hosts Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State University.

Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday in the DakotaDome.

Last year, the Redbirds (4-0) defeated USD 28-3.

This season, the Coyotes (1-2) average a total of 270 yards per game to ISU’s 446 yards per game.

Quarterback Josh Vander Maten leads USD’s offensive attack, he’s connected on 41 of 67 passes for 463 yards and two touchdowns. He recorded 32 carries for 162 yards and three rushing touchdowns in the first three games of the year.

USD’s Terrance Terry has 15 receptions for 212 yards and two touchdowns this year.

ISU quarterback Matt Brown completed 94 of 139 passes for 1,030 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Running back Darrelynn Dunn has 101 carries for 442 yards and seven touchdowns.

South Dakota State vs. Missouri State, 6 p.m.

Saturday in Brookings

The Jackrabbits host conference rival Missouri State in the Beef Bowl at 6 p.m. Saturday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings.

SDSU (3-1) is on a three-game winning streak with its last victory against Indiana State 24-10 on the road.

Last season, the Jackrabbits leads the series 4-0 and defeated MSU 43-36 in two overtimes.

Running back Zach Zenner leads the Jackrabbits with 107 carries for 906 yards and five touchdowns this season. Quarterback Austin Sumner has 48-of-102 in passing for 551 yards and four touchdowns.

SDSU’s Ross Shafrath leads defensively with 45 tackles this season.

The Bears’ leading receiver is Ryan Heaston, who has 229 yards on 44 carries through four games. Quarterback Ashton Glaser threw 84 of 152 completions for 899 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Dakota State vs. Concordia, 4 p.m. Saturday in Madison

A winless Dakota State football team searches for its first win of the season against Concordia during its annual homecoming week.

The game is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday at Trojan Field in Madison.

The Bulldogs (1-3) lead the overall series 1-0. Concordia beat DSU last season 49-21. This is the first meeting at Trojan Field

The Trojans are fifth in the nation in total pass offense with 1,324 yards and 12th in pass offense per game.

DSU’s Stacey Berg leads the nation in all-purpose yards with 817 yards and total receiving yards of 697 yards. Quarterback Brandon Large has 1,215 passing yards and eight touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns this season.

Quarterback Von Thomas leads the Bulldogs’ offensive attack with 200 pass yards per game and seven passing touchdowns in the first four games. Thomas averages 53 yards on the ground and has four touchdowns this season.

Augustana College vs. Wayne State, 1 p.m. Saturday in Wayne, Neb.

Augustana travels to take on Wayne State in a NSIC South Division showdown at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Wayne, Neb.

The Vikings lead the all-time series 7-6-1 against Wayne State. The Wildcats defeated Augustana 34-32 in their last meeting in the 2010 season.

The Vikings (2-2) are coming off of a 42-34 loss against Minnesota Duluth.

Viking quarterback Josh Hanson completed 82 of 146 passes for 1,062 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, while Dajon Newell has 69 carries for 398 yards and three touchdowns in three games.

Wayne State’s Nate Most threw 49 of 101 completions for 655 yards and five touchdowns this season. Kevin Paulsen and Adam Stark are the Wildcats’ leading receivers combining for 475 yards and five touchdowns.

University of Sioux Falls vs. Southwest Minnesota State, 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls

The Cougars look to stay undefeated against Southwest Minnesota State Saturday at the Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls.

USF (4-0) is coming off of a 21-5 win over Bemidji State University.

The Cougars average 389 offensive yards per game, while the Mustangs (0-4) average 391 yards per game.

Quarterback Taylor Perkins completed 68 of 124 passes for 889 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season. Running back Kristian Porter leads the Cougars with 58 carries for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

Carrington Hanna has 24 catches for 376 yards and five touchdowns, while Jeremiah Oates has 19 receptions for 366 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

Mustang quarterback Tyler Peschong leads the offensive attack with 941 yards passing and six touchdowns.

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology vs. Valley City State, 1 p.m. Saturday in Valley City, N.D.

The winless Hardrockers travels to take on Valley City State at 1 p.m. in Valley City, N.D.

SD Mines (0-4) has a total of 1,062 offensive yards this season averaging 266 yards per game. VCSU is on a three-game winning streak and is 3-1 overall.

Quarterback Mike Zanutto complete 57 of 95 passes for 381 yards and one touchdown this season. Running back Jahmel Rover has 45 carries for 279 yards and two touchdowns.

VCSU’s Taylor Cino has 225 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Black Hills State vs. Western State, 1 p.m. Saturday in Gunnison, Colo.

Black Hills State and Western State face off in a battle of winless football teams at 1 p.m. Saturday in Gunnison, Colo.

BHSU is coming off of a 31-29 loss to Colorado Mesa last week.

Yellow Jacket quarterback Wes Kragt leads the offensive attack averaging 152 passing yards per game and 10 touchdowns this season. Running back Drew Neilsen has 320 yards and six touchdowns.

WSCU quarterback Brian Duboski has 488 yards and six touchdowns in four games.

Presentation College vs. Martin Luther College, 3 p.m. Saturday in Aberdeen

Presentation College returns home to host Martin Luther College at 3 p.m. Saturday in Aberdeen.

Both teams at 3-1 on the season.

The Saints are coming off of a 54-7 loss to Mayville State last week.

Quarterback Stephen Braswell leads the Saints’ offensive attack with 853 passing yards and six touchdowns this season.

MLC has a total of 881 offensive yards and quarterbacks Josh Rathje and Matthew Olson each have two passing touchdowns on the season. Olson also leads the Knights with 55 carries for 244 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
