In the final regular season games of the year, the Mitchell High School boys’ soccer team fell 3-2 to Groton Area, while the girls’ squad finished tied at 1 Tuesday at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.

Senior Zach Moen scored both goals for the boys’ team, which ended its season 1-9-1 and missed the playoffs.

The girls’ trailed 1-0 at half, but a goal by Erin Farnham helped the Kernels end with a tie. The team finished the regular season 2-6-1 and will compete in the postseason.

Wesleyan soccer teams both win

YANKTON — Dakota Wesleyan University picked up soccer victories from the men and women’s teams Tuesday as the men won a double-overtime thriller 3-2 and the women cruised to a 5-0 decision.

Eric Moller scored the game-winner for the men, the goal marked his second of the game. Hugo Gonzalez was the other Tiger to get one in the net with a rebound off a penalty kick early in the contest.

Megan Johnson had a big day for Wesleyan’s women’s team. Johnson tallied one goal and two assists in the contest. Thara Ali Said scored two off the bench for the Tigers.

The win was the first for the women’s team as it improved to 1-4, while the men moved to 2-7. Both teams take on Concordia Saturday in Seward, Neb.

Hieb leads Tigers to 5th-place finish

HASTINGS, Neb. — Austin Hieb shot a two-round total of 145 for fourth-place at the Hastings College Swan Song Fall Invitational men’s golf meet Monday in Hastings, Neb.

Hieb’s finish was the best for any Dakota Wesleyan golfer at the event, and the team finished in fifth-place with a 603. The top team score at the event came from the University of Nebraska-Kearney with a 585.

The Tigers were the top finisher among Great Plains Athletic Conference schools, with Doane College next in line with a 612.

Mac Young tied for seventh with a 147, Josh Korn finished 26th with a 155, Tyler Burr carded a 156 and Kyle Higgins shot a 161. Dakota Wesleyan is off until GPAC Qualifier No. 2 on Oct. 10 in Sioux City, Iowa.
