Firefighters and law enforcement don’t know what caused a Mitchell modular home to start on fire Saturday morning.

Mitchell Assistant Fire Chief Paul Morris said the fire, which occurred at 1116 East First Street, started in the northwest corner of the home on lot No. 34.

The final report on the fire was not yet completed Sunday, and Morris said the fire’s cause is still undetermined, but is not considered suspicious.

Morris said there were two people sleeping in the home when the fire started just before 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

“They were alerted by smoke detectors and were able to safely get out,” he said.

The home is owned by Frederick Joramo, who rents it out. He said it was a total loss. Mitchell police officers also responded to the scene, according to Sgt. Ryan Erickson. No further information was available by press time.
