Mitchell tennis team goes 0-4 at Pierre Invitational

PIERRE — The Mitchell High School girls’ tennis team got three wins from Courtney Wells at the Pierre Invitational Saturday in Pierre, but the Kernels dropped all four matches on the day.
Mitchell nearly came away with its first victory of the event in the last match against Rapid City Central. Central won 5-4 as the Kernels recorded wins from Wells and Haley Smith in singles play, and two wins in doubles competition with Wells teaming up with Chelsea Kracht for a forfeit win and Halle Larson and Tatum Dean defeating Kassidy Weathers and Devorah Collins 10-6 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Wells’ singles win was a forfeit and Smith defeated Weathers 10-6 in the No. 4 singles spot.
Mitchell was swept 9-0 to open the day against Rapid City Stevens. The Kernels lost their next two matches 8-1, First to Pierre, with Wells defeating Sam Beck 10-1 for the lone win, followed by a setback from Brandon Valley.
Wells took down Brandon Valley’s Erin Buse 10-6.
After Saturday’s losses, the Kernels dropped to 3-19 on the season and 0-12 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference.
Mitchell hopes to bounce back as it travels to take on Vermillion today in Vermillion.
