The Hastings College men’s and women’s soccer teams defeated Dakota Wesleyan Saturday in Mitchell. The 16th-ranked Hastings’ men won 5-1. Hugo Gonzalez scored the Tigers’ lone goal in the loss. Emmanuel Paravalos recorded 11 saves in net. Things didn’t go any better for the DWU women’s team, as Hastings came away with a 6-1 win in the game.

Dakota Wesleyan soccer teams both fall to Hastings

The Hastings College men’s and women’s soccer teams defeated Dakota Wesleyan Saturday in Mitchell.

The 16th-ranked Hastings’ men won 5-1. Hugo Gonzalez scored the Tigers’ lone goal in the loss. Emmanuel Paravalos recorded 11 saves in net.

Things didn’t go any better for the DWU women’s team, as Hastings came away with a 6-1 win in the game.

Megan Johnson recorded an unassisted goal for the Tigers’ only score in the match. Kari Durham had seven saves in the first half, while Erika Carpenter finished with four saves in the second half.

The men’s record sits at 1-7 on the season, while the women are 0-4 as both teams take on Mount Marty Tuesday in Yankton.

Former DWU track athlete wins half marathon race

OMAHA, Neb. — Former Dakota Wesleyan University track athlete Thomas Madut won the half marathon at the 2012 Omaha Marathon Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

Madut finished the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 25 seconds. His time was 34 seconds better than second-place finisher Scott Haug, of Elkhorn, Neb.

Two Kernel golfers place in top 10 at ESD tournament

YANKTON — Mitchell High School’s Jaron Weich took third place at the Eastern South Dakota Championship golf meet Saturday in Yankton.

Weich shot a 77, one shot away from second-place finisher Tyler Anderson, of Brandon Valley. Yankton’s Jace Guthmiller won the event with a 70.

The Kernels finished last in the team standings, but did get another top-10 finish as Jacob Rice shot an 80 to tie for ninth place. For full results, see SD golf on this page.

DWU volleyball falls in five sets

SEWARD, Neb. — Danielle Bird had 12 kills, 17 digs and three aces, but it wasn’t quite enough as Dakota Wesleyan University team fell in five sets to Concordia in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday in Seward, Neb.

Set scores were 25-17, 20-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-9.

Maggie Stehly led the Tigers in digs with 19, while Katie Lindow added 11. Briana Jung had 34 assists in the loss.

DWU dropped to 3-12 on the season and 0-2 in the GPAC and takes on Mount Marty in another GPAC match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Twins pick up two wins over Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — Jamey Carroll hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Minnesota Twins beat Detroit 2-1 Sunday, winning both games of a doubleheader to prevent the Tigers from at least tying the Chicago White Sox atop the AL Central.

The Twins won the first game 10-4.

Chicago still has a one-game lead in the division despite extending its losing streak to five with a 4-1 loss earlier in the day against the Los Angeles Angels.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde (3-4) allowed pinch-hitter Denard Span to lead off the extra inning with a single and gave up a one-out, fall-behind single to Carroll.

Jared Burton (2-1) got the win and Glen Perkins pitched a perfect 10th for his 14th save in 17 chances.
