KENNEBEC — A former clerk of courts for Lyman County pleaded not guilty Thursday to grand theft for allegedly stealing more than $1,100 that was paid to the county for traffic violations.

Denise Rae Anderson, of Kennebec, was indicted on one count of grand theft June 29. She faces a maximum 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine if convicted.

Anderson allegedly stole $1,183 in fines paid to Lyman County by various people for traffic violations between September 2008 and June 2010, when Anderson was the county’s clerk of courts.

Anderson was fired from her position as clerk of courts in January 2011. Lyman County State’s Attorney Anita Fuoss has said the indictment is not connected to Anderson’s dismissal.

Anderson will next appear in court in October for a motions hearing.
