It was a heart-breaking homecoming loss for Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon Friday night.

Freeman Academy scored the lone goal of the game with 7:58 to play to top the Eagles 1-0 at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell in a boys’ high school soccer match.

Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon finished its season with two wins, six losses and two ties.

“(Seniors) Keegan Larson-Shields and Andrew Feistner both left nothing for tomorrow,” head coach Bob Lemon said. “Keegan had some really close chances to score, and it’s unfortunate that it didn’t work out.”

Freeman Academy outshot Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon 17-8 in the game, but it was the Eagles winning the battle after halftime. MC/MV had a 7-6 shooting edge in the second half. MC/MV goalie Aaron Lemon finished with 16 saves.

“We executed in just about every phase,” said Lemon, who added that there was a fairly large crowd at the game and some alumni came back to watch to make for a fun atmosphere. “We made some adjustments at halftime with midfield. In the first, we gave them too much room and the guys really responded to that in the second half.”

The game was the final regular season game of the season. The Eagles missed out on the playoffs with the loss.
