Area officials plan hazardous materials drill

Aurora, Davison and Hanson County emergency management officials and Davison County Search and Rescue are holding a hazardous materials exercise beginning at 7:15 a.m. Saturday at the Davison County Fairgrounds in Mitchell.

Aurora, Davison and Hanson County emergency management officials and Davison County Search and Rescue are holding a hazardous materials exercise beginning at 7:15 a.m. Saturday at the Davison County Fairgrounds in Mitchell.

Crews from Mitchell, Alexandria, Plankinton, Ethan, Mount Vernon, Emery, Rosedale Colony, Stickney and White Lake will respond to several different scenarios including an explosion, tank truck mishap and an evacuation of affected personnel.

The exercise will focus primarily on preparing emergency responders to effectively respond to hazmat incidents. Trucks and other types of vehicles will roll into Mitchell’s Davison County Fairgrounds to their staging area around 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

As part of the exercise, the response to the incident will be examined as well as interaction with other response agencies and assets. Evaluators will offer comments that will be compiled in an After Action Report and Improvement Plan with guidance for future training, equipment and response procedures.
