Mitchell woman arrested for stealing 2 vehicles, crashing through fences

A Mitchell woman was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly stealing two vehicles and crashing them through fences and fields in rural Davison County, authorities said.

The incident began shortly after 2:30 a.m. when law enforcement received a 911 call from residents at a home on Betts Road in rural Davison County. They reported an intoxicated woman who came to their door seeking directions, according to South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Podzimek.

After following nearby tracks where a vehicle appeared to have entered the ditch, crashed through several fences and drove through corn fields and pastures, Podzimek found 23-year-old Jade Abdo allegedly slumped behind the wheel of a 2006 Ford F-250 pickup at the intersection of 400th Avenue and 264th Street. The intersection is located southwest of Mitchell about five miles from the home of the residents who called 911.

Abdo was arrested for first-offense drunken driving shortly before 4 a.m., Podzimek said. The pickup was seriously damaged in the incident, he added, noting the rear driver’s side tire was torn off.

Further investigation by the Davison County Sheriff’s Office revealed the pickup was stolen from rural Davison County, said Deputy Tim Reitzel.

Law enforcement recovered another vehicle allegedly stolen from Mitchell and wrecked by Abdo in rural Davison County. No further information was immediately available on that vehicle.

The property damage done in connection with the incident is “extensive,” but no exact estimate was immediately available, Reitzel said. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, he added.

Abdo faces a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted of first-offense drunken driving.
