Sioux Falls police arrest man after standoff

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Sioux Falls police have arrested a man who had barricaded himself inside an apartment for several hours on charges of rape and assault.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens says the man was arrested on the charges at a Sioux Falls apartment Thursday afternoon after a two-hour standoff. Clemens says the man assaulted a 32-year-old woman at a local hotel on Tuesday and then followed her to her residence, where he sexually assaulted her on Wednesday.

Police say the woman was unable to get away from the man until Thursday morning.

When officers went to the scene to question the man, he barricaded himself inside until authorities convinced him to exit.

The two were a former couple.
