BROOKINGS — Krista Huber threw a one-hitter and Abby Sudbeck homered as Mitchell’s high school softball team took down Brookings 8-2 in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday in Brookings.

Brookings came back to beat the Kernels 6-4 in the nightcap to move Mitchell’s record to 7-6 on the season.

“It was two games that we should have won,” Mitchell coach Jim Misiaszek said. “We were looking past a team that we shouldn’t have.”

Huber allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven in the first game. Sudbeck finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Courtney Moore went 3-for-4 with an RBI. The Kernels mustered up 11 hits in the victory.

Hallie Misiaszek suffered the loss in game two, allowing six runs — three earned — on 10 hits in seven innings. She struck out seven.

“Hallie just couldn’t hit her spots,” Jim Misiaszek said. “Brookings is a good-hitting, young ball club.”

Ellie Rew was 2-for-3 for the Kernels in the second game, while Kelsey Weber had two RBIs.

Mitchell returns to action Sunday when it takes on West Central and Yankton in Yankton.
