The Mitchell girls’ and boys’ soccer teams lost to Sioux Falls O’Gorman Thursday at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
The girls were shut out 9-0 and dropped to 2-5 on the season.
Kassondra Ptak and Kendra Brewster were in net for the Kernels. Mitchell recorded a total of eight saves between the two goalies.
“Every game they play better and better,” head coach Ryan Perry said. “If you don’t look at the scoreboard, they had a phenomenal game.
“We’re not at the level of the teams we’re playing, but we are slowly but surely coming together.”
The Mitchell boys’ team lost 5-1 to the Knights. With the loss, the Kernels dropped to 1-6 on the season.
Forward Zach Moen, who leads the Kernels in season goals, had the lone goal for Mitchell at the end of the first half.
The Knights led going into halftime 4-1, and Perry said his team was intimidated by O’Gorman.
“We’ve never played O’Gorman because they weren’t on our schedule last season, so it almost seemed like after that initial sock they settled in,” Perry said. “They were intimidated. And at the half the kids realized the score should’ve been 1-1.
“They played smarter in the second half. They were stepping to the balls more and playing with fewer turnovers.”
Cole Carlson was in goal for Mitchell and no stats were reported.
Perry said the boys and girls have similarities between the teams.
“It’s amazing that both teams are struggling with the same problems,” Perry said. “Both teams are coming together more as teams, but we need to come mentally prepared to each game.
“Skill wise we’re ready, but we misjudge situations.”
Both teams play Aberdeen Saturday. The girls’ varsity game begins at 5 p.m. and the boys’ game will follow at 7 p.m. in Aberdeen.
