In-state college football roundup: SDSU hosts UC Davis in Cereal Bowl

The South Dakota State University football team hosts UC Davis in the Jackrabbits’ home-opening game this season.

SDSU (1-1) kicks off at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings against another 1-1 team in the 17th annual Cereal Bowl.

SDSU leads the all-time series against UC Davis 4-2. The Jackrabbits have won each of the last three meetings, the last of which came in 2007.

The game will be televised on Midco Sports Net.

SDSU picked up its first win of the season last week, knocking off Southeastern Louisiana 31-14 Saturday.

UC Davis is in its first year as a part of the Big Sky Conference. The team is averaging 27 points and 318 yards of total offense per game this year. Quarterback Randy Wright has completed 27 of 42 passes this year. Wideout Alex Canon has caught four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, while Colton Silveria leads the Aggies’ run game with an average of 5.1 yards per carry.

SDSU quarterback Austin Sumner, a Brandon native, has completed 22 of 49 passes for 309 yards this year in two games and has thrown for three touchdowns and rushed for five.

Tyrel Kool is a dual-threat for the Jackrabbits’ offense. A senior from Yankton, Kool had eight receptions for 76 yards in SDSU’s season-opening loss to Kansas. Kool will also see time in the backfield this year. He rushed for 534 yards as a junior last year.

Running back Zach Zenner has had a strong season for SDSU this year, totaling 461 yards in two games with two touchdowns. He’s averaging about eight yards per carry this season.

University of Sioux Falls vs. Minot State, 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Minot, N.D.

The Cougars and Beavers match up for the third time in the past two seasons.

In 2001, USF beat Minot State twice, 38-23 and 29-10, and has a 3-1 all-time series lead.

This is a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.

USF (2-0) is averaging 38.5 points and 445 yards on offense per game this year. Minot State (0-2) is averaging 8 points and 155 yards of offense per game this season.

USF is sending Taylor Perkins under center for his third career start. Last week, he posted a game and career-high 82 yards on the ground and he passed for 140 yards and one touchdown.

Minot State played two players at quarterback last week, including Bryce Jorgenson and C.J. Evans. But true freshman Zac Cunah is expected to start Saturday.

Augustana vs. Minnesota Crookston, 1 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls

The Augustana Vikings return to Kirkeby-Over Stadium Saturday after losing 31-25 on the road to the University of Mary last week.

This is the fourth time Augustana (1-1) and Minnesota-Crookston (0-2) are meeting. Augustana has won the previous three games.

This is a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game. The last time Minnesota-Crookston has won an NSIC game was a 20-16 victory over Minnesota State University-Moorhead in 2008. Since then, Crookston has lost 39 straight league games.

Augustana is averaging 30 points per game to Crookston’s 22.5.

Individually for the Vikings, running back Dajon Newell is leading the team with 36 attempts for 192 yards. Quarterback Josh Hanson is 41-of-77 passing for 570 yards and six touchdowns. Wideout Grant Gebhardt has caught 12 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 126 yards per game.

Crookston running back Richard Haley is averaging 6.5 yards per carry on 40 attempts with no touchdowns this season. Quarterback A.J. Barge is averaging 59 yards per game and has been intercepted twice.

Northern State University vs. Winona State, 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Winona, Minn.

Northern State University is looking to pick up its first win after dropping two opening games of the season.

The Wolves travel to Winona State (1-1) for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup Saturday.

NSU has losses against Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State this season. Both teams are coming off Week 2 losses, with Winona falling to No. 2-ranked Minnesota-Duluth.

Winona State holds the all-time series 20-16 and has won the last 10 meetings.

Northern State is averaging 22 points per game, while Winona has put up 37 points per game this season.

Individually, NSU quarterback Jared Jacobson is averaging 118 rushing yards and 83 passing yards per game this season.

Black Hills State University vs. Colorado Mines, noon Saturday in Golden, Colo.

In two games this season, Colorado Mines has scored a total of 128 points in victories over William Jewell College and South Dakota Mines.

Saturday, Black Hills State gets the chance to slow down Colorado Mines’ offense.

BHSU (0-1) lost its season-opening game to Idaho State last week 38-5.

The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by quarterback Ward Anderson, who was 15-of-41 for 79 yards. Bryar Desanti had 11 rushes for 54 yards and Reed Reuman caught four passes for 46 yards.

Colorado Mines is averaging 591 yards per game and allowing 316.

Individually, sophomore quarterback has taken most of the snaps for Colorado Mines. He’s 53-for-78 passing for 707 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception.

Senior wideout Cody Renken has caught 12 passes for 131 yards and freshman wideout Jimmy Ellis has hauled in 11 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Colorado Mines has four players on the team with at least 100 receiving yards through two games.

South Dakota Mines and Technology vs. Jamestown College, 1 p.m. Saturday in Jamestown

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is looking for its first win of the season when it travels to Jamestown College.

The Hardrockers (0-2) have scored seven points this season in blowout losses to the University of North Dakota and Colorado Mines.

Mike Zanutto has seen the majority of the time at quarterback for the Hardrockers. He’s 36-of-64 passing with three interceptions, 243 yards and one touchdown.

Deshaun Scott is the only wideout on the roster who has eclipsed 100 yards with six catches for 102 and the lone TD. Marshall Davis has eight catches for 42 yards.

Jamestown (0-3) is also searching for its first win of the year. The Jimmies have losses against Rocky Mountain College, Concordia-Moorhead and Wisconsin-Stout.

Jamestown quarterback Gus Ramasco is averaging 174.7 yards per game through the air, while running back Lance Johansen is averaging 11 carries for 133 yards per game. He has one TD on the season.
