Dordt tops Dakota Wesleyan in GPAC matchup

Dakota Wesleyan University lost in straight sets Wednesday at the Corn Palace, dropping its first Great Plains Athletic Conference match of the year.

Dordt College topped the Tigers by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.

“I think each of the past 10 to 15 years, they’ve been a very solid program within the conference,” DWU coach Eric Viney said. “Our conference is so deep and talented. There aren’t many easy matches for any team out there.”

The loss is the fourth straight for the Tigers and fifth time they’ve been swept this year.

DWU (0-1 GPAC, 3-11 overall) got a match-high eight kills from Rachel Tinklenberg. Elizabeth Mahsem and Sam Sandau each had seven kills and setter Briana Jung had 25 assists.

Maggie Stehly had a team-high eight digs for the Tigers.

“This helps our team understand where we need to be and the intensity level we need to play with every day as we step into the conference matches,” said Viney, whose team finished with one GPAC win last year in 16 matches.

Viney listed Sandau and Mahsem as bright spots.

He said Sandau was injured in the final four points of the night. The extent of the injury was unknown Wednesday evening.

Dordt College was led offensively by Lindsey Floen’s 11 kills. Kayla Gesink had 28 assists and Kayla Broekhuis had 11 digs.

Dakota Wesleyan continues conference play Wednesday, when it travels to Sioux City, Iowa, for a 7:30 p.m. match against Morningside, which won the GPAC last year.
