Kernels sweep Rough Riders 12-3, 8-4

Big hitting by the Kernels led them to sweep Sioux Falls Roosevelt in high school softball action Friday at Cadwell Park Sports Complex.

“Twenty-four hits in a night,” head coach Jim Misiaszek said. “We’re hitting the ball well, and that’s nice to see.”

Mitchell won the first game 12-3 in five innings as the Kernels ended the game early in a mercy rule. The Kernels had 12 runs on 12 hits during the game.

“Hitting like this is great, especially heading into a stretch of the season where we’ll play a lot of games in a short period of time,” Misiaszek said.

Abby Sudbeck led the team, going 3-for-3 at the plate, hitting two triples and earning three RBIs.

Amy Gaetze went 2-for-4 at the plate and one RBI, while Courtney Moore was 2-for-3.

Hallie Misiaszek was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on seven hits and recording six strikeouts in five innings.

In the second game, Mitchell won 8-4 over the Rough Riders and earned eight runs on 12 hits.

Sudbeck again led the Kernels, going 3-for-4 with one triple and an RBI and Hannah Webster and Kelsey Weber were both 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.

Pitcher Krista Huber pitched seven complete innings allowing four runs on six hits and had nine strikeouts.

The Kernels play Brookings in a doubleheader with games at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Brookings.
