SIOUX FALLS (AP) β€” The Crooks Gun Club is cleaning up lead shotgun pellets deposited over several decades at its shooting range north of Sioux Falls.

Most of the 400 club members who shoot trap and skeet use lead shot, which falls into a wet area where it’s difficult to collect.

Club president Terry Steenholdt said the club moved more than 5,000 cubic yards of wet soil to an area where it could be dried so the lead can be removed.

He says the club has hired a man who uses screens and sieves to collect the metal, which is then sold to scrappers.

Steenholdt says removing the toxic metal is also good for the environment. He estimates about 250,000 pounds of lead will be collected.
