Tigers volleyball team loses two matches at Corn Palace Classic

The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team lost two 3-1 matches Saturday at the Corn Palace Classic.
DWU lost to St. Mary’s by set scores of 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23 in its first match of the day and lost to Dakota State 25-27, 28-26, 25-16, 25-15 in the Tigers’ second game.
Danielle Bird and Sam Sandau led the Tigers offensively against St. Mary’s. Bird had 14 kills and Sandau had 11. Briana Jung had six assists and Katie Lindow added seven digs.
Against Dakota State, Bird had 11 kills and Sandau had seven. Rachel Tinklenberg and Elizabeth Mahasem each had nine. Jung had 24 assists, Kelli Swenson had 14 assists and Bird added 20 digs.
The Tigers (3-10) start Great Plains Athletic Conference play next. The Tigers host Dordt College at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Corn Palace.
Mitchell fastpitch tops R.C. Stevens

RAPID CITY — The Mitchell fastpitch team went 1-3 over the weekend in four high school softball games in Rapid City.
Mitchell defeated Rapid City Stevens in its first game, but lost to Rapid City Central twice and lost to Stevens 2-1 in the final game of the weekend.
Friday, Krista Huber pitched Mitchell to a 5-4 win over Stevens, throwing five innings,allowing three hits and striking out seven.
Offensively for Mitchell, Courtney Moore had two doubles and two RBIs and Huber went 2-for-3 with a double.
“This was the first time in our team history we beat Stevens,” head coach Jim Misiaszek said. “We got that monkey off our back.”
Mitchell lost 6-2 Friday and 5-4 Saturday against Central.
Hallie Misiaszek allowed six runs, three were earned, and she struck out five in six innings of work. She also allowed six hits.
Hannah Webster was 2-for-4 at the plate for Mitchell, Huber was 2-for-3 and Abby Sudbeck was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Huber took the loss in the second game against Central, throwing six innings and allowing 11 hits. She struck out three.
Offensively, Emily Sudbeck was 2-for-3, Abby Sudbeck had a two-run homer and Webster had two hits.
Misiaszek took the mound in the final game, tossed seven innings against Stevens, allowed five hits and struck out 11.
Misiaszek went 1-for-3 at the plate and Abby Sudbeck went 1-for-2 with the team’s lone RBI.
“Little things cost us a lot over the weekend,” Jim Misiaszek said.
Mitchell (4-6) hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 6 p.m. today at Cadwell Park Sports Complex in Mitchell in a doubleheader.
MC/MV game not played due to absent referees

CUSTER — No referees showed up to the soccer game between Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon and Custer Saturday.
MC/MV head coach Bob Lemon said there was a miscommunication between officials.
“The game was on the official state website, but for whatever reason it was an oversight,” Lemon said. “We were not able to play.”
Lemon said the game will not be rescheduled and doesn’t know if the game will be declared a forfeit or if it’s eliminated from the schedule.
MC/MV travels to play Groton at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
DWU men’s golf team takes 11th in first meet

MARION, Iowa — Dakota Wesleyan University’s men’s golf team finished 11th in its first meet of the season at the Cropper Golf Classic, hosted by Mount Mercy University.
The Tigers shot a two-day total of 621, which put them one stroke behind St. Francis in 10th place.
“Obviously you want to play to the level that you believe you’re capable of playing, and we definitely didn’t do that,” DWU head coach Adam Anderson said.
DWU’s Austin Hieb led the team tying for 15th place with a total of 150 in two rounds.
After Hieb, Travis Johnson fired a 152 to tie for 23rd; Josh Korn shot a 162; Tyler Burr carded a 164 and Anthony Husher shot a 167.
Mount Mercy’s Ryan Schlueter outshot the field by two strokes to win the event with a 141 leading Mount Mercy to the team title with 578 strokes.
DWU’s next action is at Northwestern College at Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City, Iowa. The meet is the first of two Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier meets this spring.
Scott Larson hits first hole-in-one

Scott R. Larson made his first hole-in-one Sunday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
Larson used a pitching wedge for the shot on hole 8, which is 122-yard par 3.
Bartling leads Gregory past Avon 52-0

SIOUX FALLS — Jaden Bartling scored five touchdowns in Gregory’s 52-0 victory over Avon in a high school football game Friday during the Fellowship of Christian Athletes SoDak Bowl at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls.
Gregory put up a total of 462 offensive yards in the game to Avon’s 68 yards.
Bartling was 5-of-7 passing for 137 yards and had nine carries for 209 yards.
Gavin Thomas had three receptions for 80 yards, while Brady Boes led the defense with 11 tackles.
Avon’s Brandon Kocmich had 10 carries for 28 yards and 10 tackles in the game.
Gregory (3-0) hosts Kimball/White Lake Friday, while Avon (1-2) plays Andes Central Friday.
