Glad You Asked: Wheelchair seating offered at stadium

Q. Where are wheelchair-bound people supposed to sit during football games at Joe Quintal Field? Near as I can tell, the only place is on the west side of the bleachers, but it’s right in the midst of the band, where nobody my age would want to be. That doesn’t seem like a good place to sit. Are there other places to sit for those in wheelchairs?

A. Geoff Gross, athletic director for the Mitchell School District, provided this response by email.

“There is indeed a spot on the west end of the stadium near the band. I would say there is enough room there for 25 wheelchairs and companion seating combined.

“However, there is also an exact mirror image of this situation on the east end of the stadium; we had at least four wheelchairs and companions sitting in this area last week, I noticed, and we have others that use it regularly but were not there last week.

“We also have wheelchair seating and companion seats on the visitors’ side.

“If we have people who are completely bound to their vehicle, we do allow them to enter through the southwest gate and park along the track. We have a couple of people who do this at each game.

“Later this season, we will add 20 permanent companion seats in these areas because we have had someone purchase a memorial for a recently deceased local individual. I have ordered these, but they have not arrived yet.”
