Dakota Wesleyan University linebacker Anthony Cervantes was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference defensive player of the week for his performance in the Tigers’ win over Dakota State University, it was announced Monday.

Cervantes led the Tigers with 6.5 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss in the 40-14 win on Saturday. He also recorded 1.5 sacks and had a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Tigers lose two soccer matches

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s soccer team dropped to 0-2 to open its season with a 4-1 loss to Texas Wesleyan University Friday in Fort Worth, Texas, and a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma City University Sunday in Oklahoma City.

Hugo Gonzalez got the Tigers’ lone goal in the loss to Texas Wesleyan. DWU trailed 2-0 at the half before Gonzalez narrowed the gap to one with his goal. Alex Ek was in net for the Tigers and finished with two saves.

Emmanuel Paravalos had seven saves while playing goalie for Dakota Wesleyan in the team’s loss to Oklahoma City University.

DWU volleyball team falls twice

Dakota Wesleyan’s volleyball team dropped matches to Mayville State and the University of Sioux Falls to finish 1-3 at the DWU Labor Day Classic Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Tigers took the first set against Mayville State 25-23, but the team dropped the next three sets 25-8, 25-22 and 25-17 to lose the match.

Danielle Bird had 14 kills in the match and Rachel Tinklenberg added 10. Briana Jung finished with a team-high 40 assists.

Wesleyan fell in straight sets to USF. Set scores were 25-13, 25-18, 25-18.

Jung finished with 17 of the team’s 18 assists and Bird led the team with eight kills. Maggie Stehly finished with 10 digs in the loss.

The Tigers dropped to 2-6 overall and will face of with USF at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sioux Falls.

Brunke gets best finish for Tigers at Augustana meet

SIOUX FALLS — Haley Brunke took 31st place in the women’s 3-mile run at the Augustana Twilight cross country meet Friday in Sioux Falls.

Brunke’s finish was the best for the Tigers as she finished the run in 18 minutes, 37.98 seconds. Skylar Forgey’s time of 19:34.66 was good for 54th place in the women’s race while other DWU women’s runners to compete were Nicole Court-Menendez (79th), Heather Banister (95th) and Jamie Geho (98th).

For the men’s 4-mile run, Trace Tjeerdsma, Justin Bruggeman and Andrew Hernandez finished 96th, 97th and 98th respectively.

Tiger runners David Elliot (100th), Jeff Sahli (104th) and Mike Claar (116th) also competed in the event.
