Lightning strike causes area fire

GANN VALLEY — Lightning struck some alfalfa bales south of Gann Valley around 12:30 p.m. Thursday and started them on fire, said Buffalo County Sheriff Wayne Willman.
The fire burned about four acres of grass and hay, and about 100 bales, owned by David and Jeffrey Fuegen. Willman estimated each bale to be worth about $100, and the total loss to be about $10,000 or more.
Kimball and Gann Valley fire departments responded to the fire and were still on scene at 5 p.m. Area farmers, ranchers and neighbors also came to aid in fighting the fire.
