Alex Meagher, a 16-year-old from Pierre, was recently picked up by the Temiscaming Titans Jr. “A” hockey team in Quebec, Canada.
Meagher played goalie for a 16-and-under South Dakota hockey team that claimed a national championship and will now compete in a league with players as old as 21 years old.
Meagher’s great-grandparents, Jim and Millie Meagher, live in Mitchell and said they are excited for Alex.
“We’re proud of him,” Jim Meagher said, “but there’s nervousness too.”
Alex Meagher will live with a host family and will live in Canada until April.
Jim Meagher said Alex’s team played an exhibition game and Alex didn’t allow a goal in 45 minutes of ice time.
“They said they don’t see that very often,” Jim Meagher said. “The speed of the game is so much faster than what high school is.”
Jim Meagher said he hopes to watch all of his great-grandson’s games online and would like to travel to see him play live, but doesn’t think he will be able to make the 23-hour drive to see the team play.
