SD lab gets grant to help test synthetic drugs

PIERRE (AP) — Attorney General Marty Jackley says the South Dakota Public Health Laboratory is getting a grant of more than $3,500 to improve its ability to test suspected illegal synthetic drugs.

The lab will buy drug test standards that will help test suspected synthetic drugs against known characteristics of banned drugs.

Money for the grant comes from the state's drug control fund.

Jackley says synthetic drugs are increasingly threatening the health and safety of young people. He says the money will help law enforcement by providing accurate and timely testing of the dangerous chemicals.

The South Dakota Legislature this year passed a law outlawing a range of synthetic drugs.
