Taking that first shot

There is always a heart-withering chasm between “I’ve never…” and “I finally did.” The question always being, what moves us from one condition to the other. Often it is like that first smooch that you weren’t necessarily looking for, but in the reflection that inevitably follows, makes you forever look at the world differently once it has happened.

Our first encounter with a firearm is much the same thing. In this part of the world, where hunting seems the norm, and firearms familiarity seems to have been passed down through countless generations; there is an unspoken gap between those within the culture, and those quietly left out. The words, “I have never fired a gun before,” are always spoken softly, as if awaiting ridicule or rebuke. Perhaps the reply should be the same as that little dark haired girl had for me. “Well, here’s your chance.”

The South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks offers a program called “Step Outside.” While usually geared toward the youth who have completed Hunt Safe education classes, this year we want to invite those adults looking for the opportunity to take that first shot. The volunteer Hunt Safe instructors who facilitate this event are folks of the finest sort. Their commitment to education and firearms safety provide the best chance possible to get started right. You may be more interested in a firearm for personal defense, or for family protection, than for hunting or the myriad of shooting sports available in this area. Step Outside gives you the perfect environment to explore what is possible among the countless choices available. And while one size never fits all; this is an opportunity to discover what best fits you. If you are interested or just have questions, I am always glad to help as best I can. You can reach me at home 605-227-4281, or by e-mail (wgregory@santel.net). By the way, bring a friend.

A Step Outside event is being held between 6 and 9 p.m. Friday at the Mitchell Trap Club. The event is for anyone ages 8 and up and is free.

There is no signup required for the event and participants will have the opportunity to use archery, shotgun, .22 rifle/pistol or a muzzleloader. Youth must be accompanied by an adult and a parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver before participating.
