HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) — The Box Project, a grass-roots program of the Hernando-based Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, still holds promise for relieving rural poverty as it marks its 50th year.
The Commercial Appeal reports the milestone is being marked by an exhibit at Delta State University in Cleveland that ends Friday. But it's the stories of those connected by the Box Project that bring a living, dramatic aspect to the exhibit and the goal.
The project is designed to link needy families in the Delta and other areas with sponsors across the country.
Originally focused on the Mississippi Delta, the Box Project has expanded its outreach efforts to include rural areas in Maine, Appalachia including West Virginia, Kentucky and the Native American reservations of South Dakota.
