Parts of western and southern South Dakota remain in extreme drought, while much of the rest of the state is classified as being in moderate to severe drought.
Western South Dakota rancher Jerry Hammerquist tells the media that cows grazing on rain-starved pastures are finding it difficult to maintain their weight and feed their calves.
North Dakota is better off, though much of the eastern part of the state and the southwestern corner is in severe drought. The Agriculture Department says more than half of the state's pasture and range land is still considered in fair or good condition.
