Q. Who is responsible for killing all the weeds on the sidewalks, especially downtown and in the alleys? And what is the procedure/time frame for handling weed control?

A. According to Tim McGannon, Mitchell public works director, the adjoining property owners are responsible for taking care of weeds on sidewalks and in alleyways, just as they would be for snow.

“If the weeds get to a nuisance stage, we would likely send a notice,” he said via email to The Daily Republic.

He hasn’t heard of any problems downtown, but if there are issues residents are concerned about, they can contact the Public Works Department, McGannon said.
