The Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon boys’ soccer team fell 7-0 in its first game of the season to James Valley Christian Friday in Mitchell.

“James Valley is a very strong team and getting to see them in the first game has its drawbacks, but we saw what we have to raise our game to,” MC/MV coach Bob Lemon said.

“It wasn’t a completely futile effort. We learned some things about positioning and that was probably the most important part.”

Lemon said the defense is going to be a work in progress and he saw some players making good efforts in the game.

Sophomore Cody Gromer, who had never played soccer, played well on defense, Lemon said.

“Everybody contributed and it was a learning experience for the team,” Lemon added.

James Valley Christian led 5-0 at half and took 28 shots at the break.

“They took a lot of shots on us really early in the game, which wasn’t a surprise,” Lemon said.

Lemon said the team’s goalie, Aaron Lemon, came into the game expecting to see a lot of shots and played well, allowing seven goals on 41 shots. Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon finished with three shots in the contest.

“Aaron knew he’d see a lot of shots and his job was to not give up any easy goals,” Bob Lemon said. “All their goals were on quality shots.”

Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon’s next game is against Chamberlain on Tuesday in Chamberlain.
