The Parkston Mudcats are playing for the Class B state amateur baseball championship.
Saturday evening, the Mudcats defeated Sunshine League and District 5B rival Alexandria 6-1 to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
The Mudcats play defending state champion Crofton, Neb., at 2 p.m. at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
Parkston hasn’t played in a state amateur baseball championship game since 1968. That year, Parkston defeated Crofton, Neb., 8-7 as the tournament’s host team.
Saturday night, Parkston right-hander Brady Nolz tossed all nine innings and picked up his third win of the tournament. He allowed only three hits and one earned run. Nolz, who also recorded a save Friday against Clark, walked nine and struck out seven.
Pat Harris and Spencer Freudenthal each had two hits for Parkston, which handed Alexandria’s Chris Marek the loss on the mound.
Marek tossed six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. He walked five and struck out three.
Marek was the team’s lone player with multiple hits, recording two singles, a walk and an RBI.
