MENNO — The residents of Menno voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to approve a $2.55 million bond measure for a new sewer system.

It passed 165-17, according to Finance Officer Peggy Thranum. The city had a feasibility study done in November 2010 to decide whether the 100-plus-old sewer lines needed replacing. Thranum said video taken of the lines in 2010 showed several were cracked, had tree roots inside them and others were offset. The study also suggested some may have collapsed.

The sewer replacement project would continue sewer and water line replacement from 2011 when state Highway 18 was torn up for reconstruction, Thranum said.

The Menno City Council will meet Monday to canvass the votes.

Any residents who want to challenge the vote have 10 days from the canvassing date to enter a challenge, Thranum said.
