Akron, Iowa, scored one in the first inning but Clark scored four in the fifth and never looked back as they finished with a 7-3 win in a Class B state amateur baseball tournament game Wednesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
“All year long we’ve stayed with the game and haven’t given up,” Clark manager Fred Obermeier said.
“We just keep fighting and keep battling and it worked again today.”
Zak Vinum pitched seven plus innings for the win, allowing three runs on two hits and six walks. He struck out 10.
“Vinum has thrown well for us this year,” Obermeier said. “He’s taken a couple of tough losses but he was our guy.”
Jay Huber pitched the final two frames for Clark, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out one.
Jake Esser and Scott Varilek each recorded two hits for Clark in the win.
Derick Appley suffered the loss for Akron. He allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings and struck out nine.
Clark advances to take on the Parkston Mudcats at 8 p.m. Friday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
